Exploring Identity & Belonging With Young Kids: A Vivvi Webinar For Parents
Get the tools you need for your little ones
If you know us, you know we spend a good deal of time talking about and taking action on antiracism and social justice. We’ve been doing this work in various forms for over a decade. When our children came along, we assumed they’d just join in. We admittedly put very little intention and work behind making this work age-appropriate at the beginning. We figured that if we lived into our values, our kiddos would get the message, right?
Imagine our surprise when one of our kids misidentified their racial identity at age 2.
Tabitha here: As an activist, I was shocked. Didn’t this kid know their mama was a proud Black immigrant woman and did they not absorb these lessons on identity simply by being around me?
The answer was a resounding NO 😑
Adam here: As parents, it’s imperative that we put intention, purpose and action behind raising kids with a strong sense of self so that they feel belonging AND are able to support others in nurturing a sense of belonging. We learned real quick that it wasn’t enough to just talk AROUND our kids about these values and practices. We had to make the lessons age-appropriate and kid-appropriate.
We asked ourselves big questions like:
What does a sense of belonging look like for young kids?
How can parents nurture belonging and a strong sense of self for young children?
What are some practical ways to raise kids that help create a sense of belonging for other kids?
If you’ve ever wondered about the answers to these questions….
If you have a baby and you feel maybe a tad under-prepared to do this work….
If your little kid is already making observations and you’re at a loss as to what to do….
Then this is for you.
