Happy Hanukkah...Also, Book Bans?!
Welcome to my newsletter!
Hi!
Happy Hanukkah and happy Friday! In the past few years, Iโve been responding to a deep calling to center my life around my antiracist parenting practices, and how Adam, my partner, and I show up for our kids. It looks like more intentionality around what weโre reading, doing, listening to and talking about so Iโm excited to share some of this with you.
The format of these is super casual and I want to hear from you. I love reading every single message you send so please share how this is landing for you.ย
So letโs dive in, shall we?
What Iโm writing:
Book bans have been popping up in the media in spurts but not getting nearly the attention it deserves. I donโt want to scare you but the wave of attacks on books that tell the truth about race, identity and racism should alarm us all. But, as busy parents, what should we do? I break down the what and how in my column for Romper.ย
Whatโs coming up:ย
This Sunday, Adam and I are hosting a workshop with the Brooklyn Public Library called Antiracist Parenting: Kindergarten Edition. Itโs in the afternoon 3-4:30pm ET so hopefully you can steal time away from your delicious weekend to spend some of it with us. Itโs great for if your kids are any school age, not just Kindergarten.ย You can register here.ย
What Iโm reading:
We have two little Jews of Color in our family who are amazing and inquisitive and growing up in a world that is meant to invisibilize them. So when I read this piece from Rachel Faulkner about the concept of light during the Hanukkah season and its relationship to Black identity, it resonated deeply. If you can, take a moment, pause and think about the areas in your life where you refer to light in a positive way and dark or Black as the opposite of that. As we exist in a white-centric society, itโs so important for us to suss out and unlearn the messaging weโre consciously and subconsciously taught about race.ย
What Iโm listening to:ย
I mean, Iโm not original here because who isnโt listening to Jon Batiste? His upbeat soulful take on music invites us all into a delightful world of introspection and fun.ย
I recently started doing the dishes after eight years of Adam solely doing them (no big explanation. I just didnโt want to). So this week, you can catch me scrubbing up while belting out Adeleโs To be Loved hitting zero notes correctly.ย
Thanks for reading! Hereโs hoping youโre wrapping up work and getting ready for a peaceful weekend around people/books/animals/toys you love.ย
