Interview with Allyson Felix + Join us at Antiracist Family Day at Bklyn Children's Museum
Adam and I are super excited to be joining other incredible antiracist educators for Antiracist Family Day, brought to you by the Brooklyn Public Library and the Brooklyn Children's Museum. Some of our favorite authors will be there signing books and meeting folks. Adam and I would love to get the chance to meet you IRL and say hi. We have some incredible take-home-to-do-with-the-kids activities for you and will be sharing a bit about our Spring offering at the Brooklyn Public Library. We're cooking up some exciting stuff so don't miss it. Get more info.Â
I chatted with Allyson Felix about the realities of raising a Black daughter and what her post-retirement life is like. As it turns out, record-breaking Olympians may stress about some of the same stuff we do as parents. Read more here.Â
Tabiitha here. I've been diving back into James Baldwin recently. I asked a friend of mine whose teachings are focused on Baldwin for a book that he thinks fully encapsulates most of Baldwin's ideologies. He recommended The Fire Next Time. If you haven't read it, this book includes a letter to Baldwin's nephew and he speaks powerfully about the white gaze. The white gaze is this idea that Black people need to act a certain way, BE a certain way in the presence of white people for our own safety in social situations. It's distressing to think about but it's still accurate to this day. Here are some questions I'm pondering from these readings:
How do we raise kids that know their own power and brilliance AND who don't have to code switch to protect themselves?
And if you're white, how do you raise kids that nurture a society where kids of color can just be themselves?
If you've read The Fire Next Time, what are your thoughts on it? If you haven't, go read it so we can discuss it!
We're keeping it short and sweet today because it's a Friday and we know you're aiming for Inbox Zero by the end of the week (just us?). So that’s it from us today. Stay safe and hug your loved ones, okay?
