Our Favorite Juneteenth Book for Tiny Readers

We’re going to keep this short and sweet.
Today is Juneteenth!
And we couldn’t leave you without sharing one of our favorite books for kids 5 and under about this important day, as well as some resources for kids of all ages, whether you parent or teach.
Our absolute favorite beginner book to teach kiddos about Juneteenth is Let’s Celebrate Juneteenth written by Tonya Abari.
We love this little book because:
It’s a great introductory book for young kids to learn about Juneteenth
The colors and imagery are stunningly bright and beautiful, perfect for little eyes
The board book format makes it easy to grasp for little fingers
With minimal words but chockful of pictures, it’s a book that little kiddos can explore on their own
It’s very affordable at $10 (and also available in many libraries)
Even if you can’t get a physical copy, listen and watch a read-aloud version read by Jacqueline Sanders-Blackman.
Often, people assume that young kids don’t have the cognitive capacity to start to learn about big concepts like freedom and slavery. That’s simply not true and we’re happy that authors like Tonya Abari are helping make these conversations accessible for our tiny readers.
