Tabitha & Dr. Ibram X. Kendi In Conversation: In-Person Event
New young adult book on Malcolm X's legacy
“We are today seeing a global rebellion of the oppressed against the oppressor, the exploited against the exploiter”.
- Malcolm X.
We’re coming to you with a pretty awesome invitation, if you’re in the New York City or New Jersey area. If you’ve been following our work, you know how much we uplift the power of reading for children. It can broaden their perspectives, give them an important framing on history, and be a source of inspiration for their growing minds.
Dr. Ibram X. Kendi’s new book, Malcolm Lives! is a powerful biography, the first for young people in 30 years about the life of Malcolm X. This year marks Malcolm X’s 100th birthday and this is a fitting tribute to a man who possessed the rare ability to both lead and follow with clarity, strength and power.
Tabitha will be in conversation with Dr. Kendi and a young leader, Nyzia Newman, to chat about Malcolm Lives! on Tuesday May 13th, 2025 7-9pm with support from Watchung Booksellers. The event will be at 67 Church Street, Montclair, New Jersey.
If you’re not familiar with Dr. Kendi’s work, he is a National Book Award-winning author of 15 books for adults and children, including New York Times bestsellers like Stamped From the Beginning and How to Be an Antiracist. Dr. Kendi is the Andrew W. Mellon Professor in Humanities at Boston University and a recipient of the MacArthur “Genius Grant.” In the summer of 2025, he will join Howard University as Professor of History and Director of its newly established Howard Institute for Advanced Study.
Nyzia Newman is a young artist, student, and photographer in New York City. Impacted by the legal and family court systems from a young age, Nyzia finds transformative power and direction in his art.
This event is hosted in collaboration with Youth Justice Network. This organization provides services for young people to access the opportunities they’ve been systemically denied, so they have tools they need to make radical change in their lives and communities.
Tabitha, Nyzia and Dr. Kendi will be chatting about Malcolm X’s legacy, his commitment to antiracism, lessons kids can learn from his journey and also what us parents can teach our children about the power of activism, the difference between civil rights and human rights, and more. Today, we started with a profound quote that still resonates today about Malcolm X’s perspective on the power of class solidarity and the importance of having a class analysis as it pertains to antiracism. May 13th’s gathering is sure to be a riveting conversation.
If you’ll be there, comment or reply to this email and we’ll be sure to say hello!
That’s all from us today. Stay safe and love up on your kids, okay? Hope to see you soon.
